Ohio child custody and visitation rulings vary

There is always room for improvement when it comes to family law litigation. This is especially true when it pertains to child custody.

A recent article appearing in an Ohio newspaper highlights these concerns. This article speaks about how families receive different treatment when it comes to child custody issues depending on their location.

What the study demonstrates

It’s common knowledge that children generally do better when there is involvement by both parents in their lives. Unfortunately, not all Ohio counties take this into account when it comes to parenting time rulings.

The study claims that over 70 percent of counties in Ohio have outdated parenting time scheduling rules. For the most part, one parent may only see their children for 48 hours during a two-week period. Such a visitation period primarily involves weekend hours. Only three counties in the state provide schedules where there will be equal parenting time.

It is the belief of those creating the study that a fair child custody arrangement negates the negative impact of divorce upon a child. A shared physical custody arrangement can additionally lead to less conflict between the parents. Such an arrangement leads to more cooperation between the parents.

Why child custody cases are challenging

Child custody and visitation determinations are likely the most stressful aspect of family law cases. This may be because too many parents do not focus on what is best for the child.

It’s important to have on your side a skilled family law attorney who will stand up for your concerns. Child custody determinations can be complex and revolve around many factors. As every case has its separate circumstances, there can be no such thing as one ruling that fits all matters.
